 IN A brief ceremony after the ADR Group's annual conference and dinner at the Bodleian Library in December, three leading players in the ADR community were presented with awards. Quentin Smith, a former Addleshaw Goddard litigator-turned mediator, was named Mediator of the Year; Halliwells was named law firm of the year; and Philip Bartle QC of Littleton Chambers won an award for 'international mediation development.'

A new organisation dedicated to the interests and needs of mediation advocates launched in London last November.
Seventy-nine-year old David Shapiro, former chairman of the Panel of Independent Mediators, parted company with law firm SJ Berwin on 31 January where he has been employed as a consultant since arriving in the UK 12 years ago.
The CPR Institute, based in New York, presented Lord Woolf with the James F. Henry Award at its annual meeting on 17 January at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.
